Coffin Lids:
Rock 'N Roll
Screeeeeeeeeeeeeamch. Feedback drills through my ears and starts the album off thrashing. Sure, this is one of those albums that borders the unlistenable, but please do not get too disheartened; dont pass this album off as another one you ignore in the used bins at your local record store. The content found here is just as raunchy and low quality as the cover art. Thank you Bomp!, you have done it again. Just when I thought you could not get anymore lo-fi, you surprise me once again. This, like the Black Lips from Bomp!, sounds like it was recorded straight to an old cassette boombox from some poorly miced live show, ripped right to CD and accidentally thrown in the straight to press pile missing the to be mastered stack. For those purists out there missing their low grade, scratchy old punk rock cassette tapes and demos, Ive got something for you they call themselves the Coffin Lids. Their sound is straight up, hell-bent rock n roll crammed through a rusted, tinny beer can, a bit reminiscent of old heroes, the Sonics. The guitars shift from chucky chords to quick surf-type riffs, real fast and gnarly; the singer howls, the drummer clubs and the bassist wanders. Through the muck, a rockabilly tinge presents itself to the trashy rock of these anthemic garage rock n rollers. The subject matter is mostly campy and horror, but the singer throws in love songs to stir things up. Even their anthem Beer & Rock n Roll gets you off your feet wanting to chant along and pump your fists. Theyre about keeping things pure, simple and fun. The modesty of this album renders it very authentic and honest. Rock n Roll was born to be dirty, gritty and offensive; the Coffin Lids help offer a rally call to the return of a time of pre-glossy, pre-glamorous rock. We demand raw, grimy rock, and they deliver. The wonder and energy are always in the live show, where theyre supposed to be; the album is just the calling card that brings you to that show. The Coffin Lids seem to understand this concept, and they, along with Bomp!, are here to usher us into a new era of pure, sweaty rock n roll. This one here is a keeper.
