Confidence Man: Miracle of Modern Living
[self-released]

There are numerous ways to describe the sound of this album accurately, but the fairest thing to say is that it sounds like a cross between Pearl Jam and Face to Face. The good news is that it sounds like a cross between those two bands when they're at their most rocking points as opposed to their weirdest and wussiest, respectively. All the songs on this album have that underlying pop-punk quality that leaves a bad taste in the mouths of most; but in defense of Confidence Man, there are very few ways that a newer band can crunch out pop-punk correctly. They aren't one of the originals, but that doesn't stop them from trying. Some of the better tracks on the album are Trailer Bride and Snow Angels. These are two songs that don't pretend to be tough while they are in fact the sappiest love songs ever. Trailer Bride maintains a sense of humor to it while Snow Angels is a sad song which is about as lonely and desperate as it gets. One thing that is disconcerting is that Confidence Man bills itself as a "punk/rock outfit" while their music is anything but punk. Once they forget the idea that a band has to be "punk" to be popular, they will be able to make a record without trying to attach a certain kind of label to it. Overall, this album's strengths outweigh its weaknesses, so it's clear that if they can drop the "labeling" mindset they'll improve vastly on their next release.
