Dakota Suite: This River Only Brings Poison
[Planting Seeds]

Last week, I was tossing around the idea of slitting my wrists.  Luckily, I had not yet listened to Dakota Suites This River Only Brings Poison, for that surely would have pushed me over the edge.

This slow, miserable bore of an album seems to go on forever.  I am not a very religious man, but this disc brought me to my knees praying out to God to let the misery end.  To make matters worse, if you havent hung yourself from the rafters with a sturdy belt by the completion of the albums thirteen songs, theyve included four bonus tracks for further suicidal inspiration.

Dakota Suite mixes up the instrumentation in a feeble attempt to keep your attention while youre waiting for your garage to fill with carbon monoxide.  They alternate between boring guitar-based songs, boring piano-based songs, and boring horn-based songs.  Truth be told, some of the instrumental bits arent bad.  But then that sad sack of a singer will start up again, and youll be putting your head back in the oven in no time.

The singer is what makes this record one of my least favorites in recent history.  He sounds so depressed that Im not sure why he even showed up to the recording session in the first place.  I dont know how, but hes managed to suck every last bit of life out of his voice.  There is absolutely zero emotion conveyed.

Stay far away from this CD.  Your continued existence may depend on it.
