Danny Pruitt: Alamosa EP
[Beechfields]

Imagine that your house is empty and dark.  You’ve turned off all the lights and pulled back the curtains from your windows so you can see the landscape bathed in the winter moonlight.  From your speakers you hear the soothing acoustic guitar and haunting voice of Danny Pruitt as he serenades you with his album opener, “It Could Be Snowing.”

This singer-songwriter has a unique way of blending his vocals that borders on eerie but remains consistently simple and understated.  Mr. Pruitt has a voice that gently asks you to close your eyes and imagine the stories he is singing about.  His soft voice doesn’t need anything to make it sound beautiful (though in “Nicole Diver” his vocals do come off as a little bit forced and wobbly).

His voice sounds at home on the minimalist recording and evokes visions of a breathier and at times slightly raspy Mark Kozelek, most notably on the EP’s closer, “Day Follows Night,” in both the vocal style and the tone of the backing instrumentals. The accompanying music is sparse yet moody in each of the four tracks.  This style fits Pruitt well.

The title track would sound great sitting around a campfire.  Pruitt has a voice for musical story-telling. While there is not huge variation in each song, it’s hard to judge someone’s range on only four tracks, especially when the longest track sits just under four and a half minutes.  But if this is a sneak peak of what is to come, I look forward to hearing more from this artist.
