Darby Jones:Harmony and Discord
Darby Jones latest full length, Harmony and Discord, was released on RoyalScrewMachine Records. While these guys can write heartfelt lyrics and play decent, harmonious songs, they are still a bar band. And no, I dont know that for a fact, but their record sounds like every other original band that plays in bars in New Jersey and in bars all across America. Darby Jones, however, were fortunate enough to have the money and/or the friends to produce a really great sounding record. The sound is quite polished and the instrumentation benefits from the production work. All the instruments come across distinctly, and that gives the songs depth, where they would otherwise be lacking. Like most bands, these guys garner their fan base from playing out, playing out, playing out. This record could definitely earn them more fans from outside the club circuit, especially having a shiny new CD to hock that sounds like that other band on your local big city radio station me, I got KROQ. As I was saying, I would guess that these guys are probably more impressive live. I cant help wondering if the vocals, shared by guitarist Nick Cavagnaro and Rob Chojnacki, are raw and better fit the music in a live setting? The album is such a perfected affair that the vocals sound rough with the harmonies as if the music wants to be meaner but it cannot be because then it wouldnt match the pitch of the vocals. Perhaps a live presentation with a crowd and no fancy computers would prove that the songs are louder and the vocals more emotional. When they sing, So can you take me on? Im not convinced anyone needs to answer that. It is more of a statement rather than a declarative, So can you take me on!!! It just seems like an emotion that is being stifled in a fancy voice track. Catch them in a watering hole near you; I would only if I was totally faced. Maybe not even then though, as they would probably make me sleepy.
