Artists: Death by Salt, a SLUG Compilation
Death by Salt is the seventh compilation from the influential indie zine SLUG, based out of Utah. A year in the making, the 3-disc set culminates in hours of rock n roll, encompassing all that Utah has to offer, rock-folk-hip-hop-metal you name it, and it made the cut. SLUG handpicked 59 of Utahs worthiest bands, out of over 200 hopeful applicants. They submitted material over a year ago and only found out if they made the compilation by going to the release party this past February. That is bitchin, even if the majority of the music is not so hot. Most of it is your basic power-pop flavored with enough angst to be considered nouveau-something and folky enough to be quirky. Standouts include Swimmin in Booze by Salt City Bandits, which really does sound like swimming in booze, except there might be more distortion. Straitjacket by Hudson River School is a good song not crazy good but alright. I also like Lands by Dulcesky very doom and gloom. I love doom and gloom. Fill er up. This compilation also includes a great little, well not that little, informative booklet with a brief synopsis of each band on the comp, as well as those who worked on it. It really is very cool, as is the cardboard case it comes in. It is true that some of these bands have changed lineups since their contribution was submitted, and some have even broke up dont cry. How rad to at least have had one recording to look back on, especially since it is part of one of the seemingly most important records to come out of Utah. As the promo says (and I love this because I hate the band): Fuck the scene and fuck you too, for believing the only good thing to come out of Utah is The Used. A little attitude can go a long way.
