Death on Wednesday: Songs to ___ To.
[SideCho]

On first listen, what stands out most about Death On Wednesdays music is Nathan Lawlers voice.  He is a bit of a crooner, but his crooning comes with a tough edge to his voice.  He reminds me of the vocalist from the New Jersey band Demonspeed I half thought it was him for a moment, but these guys are from California.  Needless to say, I like his voice.

However, on the whole, Death On Wednesdays EP Songs To ___To isnt anything special.  It comes almost three years after the bands 2000 full-length debut Buying The Lie.  I havent heard that record, but this follow-up is pretty basic, pop leaning, punk music.  I use that term loosely, in a way that I would describe many of the Southern CA bands that exist these days.  There is a ballad, and there is an acoustic-type tune entitled Sympathy, but not much else really jumps off the CD.  I kept waiting for Death On Wednesday to kick into metal gear or something different. It just sounds like something a bit more grinding would better complement the musical talent, with Jeff Saenz on lead guitar, Kevin Smith on bass and Jorma Vik on drums.  It is almost as if these guys are holding back on kicking ass for no apparent reason.

Lyrically, there is not much going on either.  It seems as if someones heart has been broken many times over or just smashed really hard once.  Lastly, there is a hidden track.  About a minute into track six, a countrified rocker blares out of the stereo.  It was pretty alright, but I just cant stand hidden tracks; so my opinion is obviously tainted.  I would pass this one up if I were you.
