The Deep
Eynde: Shadowland
The Deep Eynde is a Disaster Records, fully charged, Misfits-inspired rock band out of Southern Californias punk breeding grounds. Some rockabilly elements grace the album with their presence, but mainly this is just good, straight up dark punk rock. Lots of skull and knife imagery adorn the albums artwork, so you can kind of guess in what direction these guys are heading or for which demographic theyre aiming. The Deep Eynde deem themselves Southern California Devil Punk, which is surprisingly accurate with no arguments from this camp. Buried in their songs, hints of early AFI are noticeable, but they also maintain that diesel sound youd find on a Gearhead Records release. This drive creates that good, dirty, horror punk feel but keeps the ability to hold the listeners attention, sustaining a freshness and plain ol fun. Tattoos, mowhawks, black jeans, chains, piercings, crooked black hair, Clash t-shirts, chops and attitude stare out at you from underneath the tray of the case as the album churns from track to track. This album plays like an 18-wheel full throttle tear of dark-sided rock that doesnt brake until towns are left spun in dust and speed-rattled minds are left lost on the side of the road. Sure its punk rock thats been done, but the point here is that its fun, captivating and does not get old at all; its risen from the grave, dusted itself off and is as fresh as the day it was buried years ago. The frontman sings instead of screaming or shouting, proving his ability to pull in and charm the audience and show heart and inspiration in the process. Love songs jump to skull fascination songs, and anthems jump to b-horror movie themes all coming to one culminating track at the end, Mr. Guilt, which combines the feel of an old jazz swing standard with rockabilly undertones and a chilling vocal track. This final track creeps us toward our final destination, somewhere in Nowheresville, America with the lights dimmed and the radio low. The album squeaks and strains to a halt and settles in its stirred up dust. This is for fans of all things evil and rock. (Check out Devil Child, Hoodoo, Dont Walk Away, and Mr. Guilt, and then I guess you might as well check out the rest.)
