Dennis Driscoll: Voices in the Fog
The charming, lo-fi music of singer-songwriter Dennis Driscoll would sound perfect on 12 vinyl. On a CD it would probably come off sounding sterile. Apparently, the thoughtful folks at K Records who released Driscolls Voices in the Fog agree with me, which is why this CD actually sounds like a record. I can imagine them making a master copy on vinyl, playing it over and over for a couple weeks, and then recording the CDs from the vinyl master. That warm sound is there, with all the crackles, pops, and occasional skips of your favorite LPs. Overall, its an interesting effect, and I can understand the motivation behind it after all, it seems that turntables can only be found in the most diehard of music fans homes nowadays. However, it seems a little synthetic at times, and I would much rather have the album on actual vinyl, rather than a vinyl records digital approximation. Dennis does the mostly acoustic singer-songwriter thing in a way that doesnt grow tiresome by the end of his album a rarity in the genre as far as Im concerned. Occasionally he gets other instrumental backing from members of Dub Narcotic Sound System, so at least theres a lot of variety between the tracks. Ive heard it said that behind every great man, theres a great woman. The same goes for music--behind every great male singer-songwriter, theres a great woman singing backup. The songs that really stand out for me on this album are the ones that include female backing vocals, particularly Telepathic Birdcalls. Driscolls voice sounds fine when he sings alone, but he can do no wrong with the proper female harmony added to the mix. This record is playful and fun at times, sad and introspective at others, but it never veers too strongly one way or the other. The retail version evidently includes a music video, an interview with Dennis, and other interactive content. I dont have that version, so I cant tell you anything about that stuff. Im still wishing I had this on vinyl.
