The Deuce and a Quarter: Self-Titled EP
Typically, I try to review CDs with an open mind and with an objective point of view. However, when I took one look at the CD insert for The Deuce & A Quarter, I have to admit I was actually a little frightened. There is a rat, with creepy teeth, dripping with saliva. This rat has an X on his forehead, as well as his body, along with a skull. This horrific rat also has a halo, of all things, over his head. Gross. So I managed to put their five-track EP in my CD player anyway. 'What the hell,' I thought, 'give them a chance.' I cannot even describe the music on this CD. Death metal isnt it, and Goth isnt quite right, either. I like to think the three band members arent really this intense, but Im guessing they just might be. There seems to be an unusual fascination with rodents, bugs, and animals in general. There are sci-fi sort of lyrics thrown over hardcore, strong beats. Dont misunderstand me - the music is both well-written and unique and certainly unlike anything I have ever heard. But to call it music might be a stretch. It felt like noise, really, with a raging, raspy voice almost screaming out lyrics. I developed a headache during their first song, Absorbing the Head of a Fly, and maintained the headache through all four remaining tracks and for several hours afterwards. I wish that I could say I enjoyed this CD more, but I didnt. I have a feeling that The Deuce and a Quarter have their audience, but Im just not part of it. However, if youre into loud, assaulting punk rock mixed in with sci-fi banter, their five-track EP is for you. Just take an aspirin first. Trust me youll be glad you did.
