DINOSAUR JR

J Mascis formed Dinosaur Jr (originally called Dinosaur) in Amherst, Massachusetts, after his hardcore punk band Deep Wound broke up in 1983. His high-school friend Lou Barlow on bass and former All White Jury drummer Murph joined him. Their unique blend of noise and melody coupled with Mascis' laconic singing ensured they made an unforgettable entrance into the alternative/post-punk rock scene. Their sound was influenced by the likes of Sonic Youth, Meat Puppets and Black Flag with Mascis' vocals reminiscent of Neil Young. Dinosaur Jr's live performances were delivered at deafening levels, and over the next year or so the group developed a strong local cult following. In 1985, the trio released their self-titled debut album. In 1986, a veteran west coast rock group called Dinosaur protested over their band name and they were forced to rename the group, adding Jr. Their debut album was solid enough to gain them a support slot on Sonic Youth's American tour. Early in 1988, they released the seminal single, "Freak Scene", which instantly became a huge college radio hit, and led the way for their acclaimed 1988 album, Bug. Barlow left the group shortly after and was replaced by a continual stream of guest bassists. The band's profile was raised considerably in the wake of Nirvana's success but they never achieved the larger commercial success of many of their peers. The band continued to release albums in the early 90s and Mascis produced acts like Buffalo Tom and even put out a solo acoustic album called Martin & Me in 1996. The band's final Album, Hand It Over, released in 1997, was hailed by many critics as Mascis' best album in years. Mascis' solo career continues alongside his band The Fog.
