Disorder & Co.: Kinda Weird
[self-released]

Disorder & Co.s debut album Kinda Weird is the experimental and instrumentally focused rock brainchild of a guy named Xander.  Combining dream pop, space rock, prog, and an occasional bit of hard rock, Kinda Weird is one of the more eclectic albums Ive heard in a while.  Songs such as Wishing and You Fall like Rain emphasize the dreamy, space rock side of the group.  I think its worth noting that Xander has a tendency to include Joe Satriani-esque guitar shred fests in otherwise subtle soundscapes, for example in Please Hang Up.  The song Bliss portrays Disorder & Co.s heavier rock edge.  Between the bluesy metal riffs (that sound suspiciously similar to the Liquid Tension Experiment song Paradigm Shift), a synth string section, and a country and western ho-down bogie, youve got a nice dose of prog-metal freakout.

While there are some great ideas thrown around on Kinda Weird, the compositional qualities feel somewhat disjointed overall.  My other complaint is that the production on the album, particularly the guitars, sounds too thin and tinny.  I believe the album could have benefited from a bit more clarity.  Overall, I like Kinda Weird, although I probably dont like it quite enough to pay for it.  However I am interested to see what Disorder & Co. come up with next.
