Division Day:
The Mean Way In
Someone recently asked me if they could check out some of the stuff that I had been listening to. In knowing that this person probably wouldnt be listening for potential and really just wanted to hear something new, good and non-offensive to the ears, I passed them The Mean Way In. Its one of those albums that most people will find immediately pleasing, and it might even prompt them to start digging a bit more of the great music out there. But really, the truth is that this band already sounds like they would be playing on your local alternative rock station. Unless the station told its listeners the band was new talent, the happy listener would probably tap his finger on the steering wheel and continue on his merry way without a thought otherwise. Is this to say that Division Day isnt original? Not at all, but it does mean they have already crossed that threshold of having a good pop sound. Division Day takes hints from a number of great musicians of yesterday but kicks in a bit of their own style. The use of smooth and saturated keyboards added to the layered drumbeats is complimented by Rohner Segnitz and his soft, sentimental voice. Division Day offers up a delicate edge and a new direction from much of what is out there today. They have created a lush sound that pushes them above the crowd fighting to be the next great thing.
