Artists: Doghouse Records Spring/Summer Sampler 2003 Doghouse Records Spring/Summer 2003 sampler comes to us from Ohio. It features the goods of 8 bands. About 6 of these bands could very well be one in the same. The majority of this record could be described as uninspired rock. The fact that Doghouse Records seems mainly to house bands that are tagged as emo doesnt say much either. Having this genre limitation results in a monotonous, bland sampler. The Schatzi tune Coreopsis isnt even so bad but seeing as it is dropped at the very end, track #14, it isnt that refreshing to my ears after ten or so very similar songs. There are two bands here that really stick out in my mind the first being Say Anything, and I only choose them as the first because they were the worst. I really would have liked to skip them entirely after the first 39 seconds (the first 37 seconds were actually quite good musically) of But a Fleeting Illness which is practically unlistenable. But I was a rock n roll trooper and sat through as both songs came to the expected conclusion: I dont like them. The biggest ruiner was the vocals, and this was the same for their second offering Woe (The Optimist) ouch! I dont know what the vocalist is trying to get across and I would probably give myself a headache trying to figure it out, what with all the screaming and growling and so on. Very hokey, very not good. Moving on. The best stuff on this sampler are the tracks by Celebrity, which are ear-catching and delightful to listen to, in a sad way. Slow, moody, and melodic. Nothing is out of place here Remember Us and Disconnected are two very well-crafted songs. This band may be on an emo-plagued label, but their driving guitars and pleading vocals set them far apart from any of their peers who claim to be so emotionally saddled. With breakout bands like Hot Water Music and The All American Rejects having been affiliated with Doghouse Records at one time or another, it is likely that at least one of these bands will break out and rock your world. So, risking repetition, my money is on Celebrity.
