Don Alder: Take the Train, Eh!
[self-released]

After listening to Don Alders Take the Train Eh, I cant think of much to say.  To say Don is an accomplished musician is an understatement.  His finger-picking style is awe-inspiring.  That loud bang at the beginning of the album was my mind blowing.  This CD contains mostly instrumental (more on this later) acoustic guitar pieces.  And while his technique is superb, the album does begin to drag a little, resulting from a major lack of dynamics.  Though the songs are very lyrical and expressive, I find it difficult to concentrate once the technicality loses its attraction.  Its tough to pin down a favorite song since they all sound so similar, but Its [sic] Only Goodbye sticks out, if only just barely, for its melancholy rises and falls.  Im sure watching Don live must be exhilarating: fingers moving furiously, pounding the strings at an unbelievable speed.  The record, however, loses momentum fairly quickly.  Don sings in a few of the latter tracks, but the burned CD I received skips terribly on the last 4 tracks, so much so, that I cant make out more than a few garbled notes and words here and there.

In conclusion, Don is a great guitar player.  Hell, hes a great songwriter.  But he plays in a style foreign to me, and a genre Im not remotely knowledgeable of.  Is it a good release?  Sure why not, if thats your thing.
