The Double-Stops: Self-Titled EP
[self-released]

NO
ALBUM ART AVAILABE

Of all the albums I've heard or reviewed recently, the songs on this short set find their way most frequently into my playlists. The garage sound and clever, fun violin put a fresh twist on the '50s pop song structures here, to a wonderful effect. Take a Picture is a rousing, exciting retro number that has an Elephant Six sound. Ben Simon's ragged vocals lend the song a momentum that overcomes its relatively staid beat. Its a very good song, all told, and an excellent pick for opening track. The Phone begins with pretty, off-kilter violin (courtesy Ben's brother Adam) and spare guitar backup building into something remarkable before the jump into '50s-via-'80s retro. Think an emo take on the more romantic songs from Grease, with violin thrown in for enormous texture. I Dont verges on Violent Femmes territory lyrically, but the sludgy guitar and pert, unpracticed violin add a quirky appeal that makes this a highlight even on this highly enjoyable four-song EP. Highly recommended.
