Doug Cheatwood: Stories about Gods and Heroes
[self-released]

Doug Cheatwoods new EP, Stories about Gods & Heroes, is certainly successful at grabbing the listeners attention.  The first song Digging up Dinosaurs and Putting Them Together Again is one of the most schizophrenic sounding tunes Ive heard in a long time.  The song didnt hold that title very long, because the rest of the EP gets even weirder.  It sounds sort of like the most non-structured Pavement song imaginable, except the vocals are really up front and discordant, and instead of creating the chaos with typical rock n roll instruments, it sounds as though Doug just recorded lots of weird instruments and sound effects over the record until it sounded weird enough to be complete.

Id approach this release with caution.  I once had a roommate that listened to some really experimental music, and I actually think he would like Doug Cheatwood.  Its just that this EP is an example of music with all the rules thrown out: vocals overdubbed multiple times so that you have a whining Doug, a somewhat singing in harmony Doug, and on the song Barbasol, you have country-western Doug.  All of these Dougs are a bit too strange for me, but I can imagine why some might like this album.

Odd screams and alarm clocks pour through the song Winter of Our Discontent in a very disorienting fashion that (to me) has the main effect of basically twisting the music into a context that basically expresses lunacy.  I know some people are bored with the traditional musical formats that most artists employ, so they like listening to music that gets twisted into new and challenging forms.  I think my old roommate described this kind of music with the term Outsider Music.  So, since its all a little bit over my head, the best I can do is really classify it and suggest it to those brave enough to explore the more bizarre side of music.
