Dream Bitches:
Sanfransisters
Cute and catchy, the Dream Bitches weave folk-style harmonies with simple acoustic instrumentation to make music you think youve heard but really havent. They breathe fresh air into the riot grrrl scene with their clever approach that doesnt involve heavy guitars and screaming. Instead they provide a dreamy cloak over the smart, punky lyrics. One thing this album does not have is a great amount of diversity. This works okay for the girl duo, because their lyrics and vocals make you want to listen regardless of whether the backing guitar sounds awfully similar to a previous track. At times it can even inch towards the cutesy line, but the duo manage to stay on the safe side with their beautiful harmonies. Without listening too closely, the girls could be singing about walking down the beach with balloons or their favorite cat with their at-first innocent flair. But just as their name would encourage us to look closer, we would discover it isnt all kittens and sunny surf. In my favorite track, Atlantic City, a nearby city of sin, they sing about winning money, hitting the 99-cent store and having their morality assaulted. Long-time friends, Yoko Kikuchi and Ann Zakaluk have quite a decent little debut album on their hands with Sanfransisters, and it would be great for anyone looking to expand their folk-punk girl collection with something a little more intimate and quirky.
