Driver of the
Year: Statik
There is something fun about Driver of the Years Statik; the album is quirky, at times a bit monotonous, yet still packs enough of a solid punch all the way through to keep you happy. The first track The Vamp, Stars & Bars was a smart opener with a catchy riff, pounding drums and silly yet surreal lyrics: Do you believe girls are a dream/ and bigger asses. As the disc goes on there enough clever vocal harmonies and raunchy guitar parts to make Statik work even if the tempo of the album wavers. I lost the press kit on these guys so I went to the website but I couldnt quite gather where they are from. I think its Iowa, and if that is the case, then Driver of the Year is the best thing Iowa has produced since last years corn harvest. Statik is the bands first full-length album, though they have released an EP and been on a few compilations. Throughout the album, I get the impression these guys are heavily influenced by Modest Mouse or at least bands in that vein. The vocal performance has that distinct sound that goes from low end to high end in the same lyrical phrasing similar to Isaac Brock. I also detect some Bowie influence as well as Stephen Malkmus, and any combination of those three artists cant be all too bad. On the song Volume Switch, I dig the poke at the Stones with the lyric, Your book of codes are growing old/ Like the Rolling Stones, paint it black. Black as Soul is another catchy track with an almost 80s-sounding chorus and synth parts. All in all, there is a lot of good stuff throughout the release. I dont think its solid all the way through, but there is more good then bad (or at least not up to par with the good). This is a definite listen to anyone that digs the late 90s indie rock sound.
