Duke Fame: Regrets

Duke Fame is a four piece band from Atlanta that plays slightly above-average power-pop.  The music, while not exactly pushing any boundaries, is actually quite good.  I particularly liked the guitars on this CD theyve got a good sound and they are played well.  The drums need more punch.  The bass is adequate.  Which leaves the vocals...

Duke Fame plays the kind of music your typical run-of-the-mill bar band has been playing for years.  And in a laid back bar setting, these vocals might be appropriate.  But recorded on a CD, they stick out like a sore thumb and ruin the whole album.  This guy cant hit any of the notes that he ought to be hitting, and he sounds generally uninspired.  With a quality singer, this album would be worth checking out.  Instead were left with just another bar band and just another dismissible CD.

Even the backup vocals are bad.

The standout track here is Sad But Beautiful.  In fact, this is the one instance where the vocals dont sound terribly out of place.  However, it is the last song on the album, so maybe Im just getting used to the bad singing.  I guess Ill give them the benefit of the doubt.  If you live in Atlanta and youve hung out with these guys at the bars, you might want to check out their CD as a friendly gesture.  For the other 99.99% of the population, Im sad to report that Regrets just might not be worth your time.  The album title may in fact be more appropriate than the band intended.
