Dw. Dunphy: We (EP)
Ive been listening to this EP for two weeks, and Im still not sure if I like it. Dunphy starts things off with a song called Reciting, which is probably the worst song out of the six (only five songs are listed the sixth must be one of those secret hidden songs...). Its one of the more upbeat numbers (though still is not very upbeat), which is the only reason I can give for why he opened the CD with it. The synths sound too synthy. The drums sound too fake. The awkward stereo panning hurts my head. The guitars make everything sound out of tune. Dw. Dunphy has a unique singing style that will take you a couple listens to get used to. I didnt like it at first, but it grew on me after a few spins. Very laid back, multi-tracked, and slightly processed. At times it fits perfectly, but at times itll drive you nuts. The third song sounds like a Steve Perry song, with vocal melodies stolen from Oh My Pregnant Head (Labia In The Sunlight.......) by The Flaming Lips. This one takes an honorable mention in the worst song on the EP competition. Nov. 1963 is the first song to have drums that dont sound like total shit. Its fun to listen to until you realize that its an instrumental piece with some audio samples of newscasts concerning JFKs assassination thrown in for flavor. I would have liked to hear Dunphy put some actual lyrics to this one, but he opted to take the easy route for this track. The overall sound here is synthesizer based. That in itself leads to the downfall of this EP: Dunphys lazy vocal stylings would sound so much better with more organic instrumentation. Pink And Blue, the last listed track on the CD (its followed by an unlisted instrumental track), is by far the best song here. The moody fake piano comes together quite nicely with some soulful distorted guitar soloing. Dw.s vocals finally sound at home, and the percussion is so sparse that it doesnt have the cheesey feel that most of the other songs are cursed with. This appears to be a spin-off side project type of thing, to keep Mr. Dunphy occupied during his free time. I doubt that many people will be into this. However, if Dw. were to put together a real band and stop relying so much on his synthesizer, Im sure he would produce something worth listening to.
