Electric Turn
to Me: Clouds Move So Fast EP
Electric Turn To Me have much going for them. Two of their members are known from respected bands past (Blake Flemming & Marcus DeGrazia) and they have a gal singer, Silke, who is often referred to as German singer Silke which doesnt mean much to me. She doesnt sing in German, the band isnt German, they didnt record in Germany, maybe it just gives them that euro vibe? Maybe it allows them to feel a ton more eccentric than they actually sound? Who knows. Oh and then there is the guitarist, James Wilk, who was also in a NY band but his past credentials dont get nearly as much write-up as the first two fellows. So ETTM are from Brooklyn which inevitably leads to the whole Brooklyn scene comparison. Word on the street is ETTM was honing their skills and their first EP when the explosion commenced and now they rise from the sea of denim as a force unto themselves and one of NYs hottest bands. Now all that crap was culled from their press clippings and bio information. I dont believe a word of it. ETTM is recycling all kinds of mad electroclash type beats that have been overdone. They are just bringing it down to a slower, moodier tone, which must be where the psych-goth-pop outfit description hails from, because they dont sound very gothy or poppy. There are plenty of bands who do this sound in a much more inventive way. Then there are the vocals the German singer isnt bad, but she isnt so great either. Her voice waivers and falls flat throughout this recording and not in an artistically pleasing way. The many comparisons to Karen O are completely unfounded. This brings me to their live show, which is where many of the Karen O references come from Im sure, because it certainly isnt evident on this CD. I havent seen them live, but I wouldnt doubt their live show is worlds better than this EP. My curiosity might have me paying my hard-earned duckets to check them out livemaybe, someday. At least then I wont be suckered into buying a recording based on a live show, cause I will know it aint no good and sadly it rarely is.
