Eric
Stracener: Sockeye
Eric Straceners first solo album is entitled Sockeye. I have no idea what that means, as none of the songs are about socks. However, these ten tracks are about saluting the elaborate simplicity that is the acoustic guitar in a kind of pop-country flair. The Jackson, MS label is called Popaholic Records for cripes sake. Anyway, Mr. Stracener, once a rocker into the likes of Husker Du and The Meat Puppets, has made an album that sounds nothing at all like either of those bands. It is a collection of sincere, folksy songs that allow Eric to exhibit his talent for singing and playing the guitar. So as not to misrepresent this as an acoustic only record, you should know there is a mix of guitar, organ and a light spattering of drums. Not entirely a sleepy time recording, but by no means a raucous experience either. If you are into easy-on-the-ears American music, you would probably dig Eric Stracener. His toned-down expression of his emotions and living float effortlessly above thoughtful harmonies and the strumming of the gee-tar. In Juneau Blues, the use of the organ makes you feel so sad it is one of those songs that makes your stomach hurt for the person singing and pleading. From your house upon Star Hill, Do with my heart what you will, Shakin off these cruel Juneau Blues. I think I will listen to the song about four more times before shakin it off.
