Erin Frisby:
Chiroptera/Lepidoptera
Dont leave your DNA lying around/ Thats the surest way to be found out These are the opening words in Latent, an a cappella track midway through the album. It made me giggle during my first listen to hear such clever lines sung in a choral fashion. Erin Frisby has some skill up her sleeve as a lyricist, and it is evident in nearly every song on her album. Throughout her debut, the vocals are the dominant force backed by simple acoustic instrumentation or sometimes nothing at all. The album is filled with interesting harmonies and key changes that melt nicely into the folksy music. However, Miss Frisby has a beautiful voice. But wait a minute; why does this statement begin with the word however? This is because I cannot attach anything else to the word beautiful. Her voice is just...beautiful and nothing more. It is not memorable or unique in a way that would make me want to go out and buy her album over the next pretty voice, but I dont think it would take much for her personality to shine through. What intrigues me most about her music is the simplistic quirkiness that, sadly, is often overshadowed by Erins almost too powerful vocals. She tries to show off her range and ability to hold her breath forever, yet instead of picking key moments to display her talent, it almost drones on and on throughout the albums entirety. The rise and fall of her voice from an operatic high to a soft lulling low is no longer impressive but rather boring in the end. Her clever style is no longer new, but instead feels repeated many times over. Here and there, I see hints of her personality; but these moments are rare, and I would like to see more of this variation. I would like to feel Erins emotions wrapped up in every song instead of the hollow feeling I get at this point. In Habitat, there is a brief moment where a slight anger begins to boil, but it fails in trying to break away from the hushed voices holding it prisoner. She is more successful in Goodbye Moon, but I still feel as though she is really holding back.
