Esmirelda & the Tidbits: Big Yella
[Ezmo]

Listening to Esmirelda & the Tidbits is a little bit like noticing that older woman at the bar; you know, the one trying desperately to appear young. And its pitiful. Esmirelda is the brassy singer for this four-piece outfit, and her songs are as dirty as sailor talk. The overall sound of Big Yella can best be described as bar band music. But it requires a few strong brews down your gullet before these tunes even begin to sound good.
A couple of tracks here feature saxophone, namely At the Party and Easily Amused. Guitar rock, however, is the driving instrumentation for Esmirelda and her supporting Tidbits. Easily Amused easily contains the best melody here, as it takes on the feel of a spy movie in places, coming off a little bit like the Peter Gunn theme. These Tidbits get a tiny bit quiet during My Eyes, as well as at the beginning of Shut the Fuck Up. But of course, itd be awfully tough to make a convincing ballad out of a song title like Shut the Fuck Up, wouldnt it? The latter example eventually revs up to rock & roll speed.

Theres nothing wrong with playing rock & roll until you die. Nevertheless, its highly advisable that one also age gracefully along the way. This work showcases plenty of aging, but very little grace. Getting into Esmirelda makes one feel queasy; like the way youd feel about getting it on with your best friends grandma. In the end, its hard not to color Big Yella anything other than just plain crude.
