Eux Autres:
Hell Is Eux Autres/Patrick Nil
Hipsters love to clap their hands and flip their greasy hair, so naturally they would cherish Eux Autres Hell Is Eux Autres. The record gives them the chance to pseudo-modestly shake their bottoms while smoking Gauloises cigarettes and drinking Pernod. As for the band itself, they are a brother and sister duo from Nebraska that relocated to Oregon because apparently, Portland is the new Omaha. This is probably for the best, because their sweet and sappy music brings plenty of smiles on a good many gloomy afternoon in the Pacific Northwest. Heather and Nicholas Larimer equally share singing duties on the record, but the vocals shine best when they are half-shouting and half-talking in a Kathleen Hannah type of way. Examples of this are Salut Les Copins and The Things They Carried, where the call and response between Heather and Nicholas provides the greatest punch on the entire album. One problem with Salut Les Copins is that the lyrics are supposedly French, but they are barely decipherable. Perhaps that is the desired intent. Additionally, The Things They Carried opens with guitar notes that are an eerie reminder of Interpols Obstacle 1, but I hope no one will reach for Turn on the Bright Lights to see if this is true. Overall, the album is full of spunk, but tracks such as Win and Windows simply offer a lull in the action. Thankfully the momentum builds up again with Patrick Nil, which was produced by Janet Weiss of Sleater-Kinney. Weiss also produced two other tracks on the album (Carolina! and Le Projet Citron) that are so adorable, they are almost sickeningly darling. Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot they are not. Laetitia Sadier and Tim Gane they are not. Heather and Nicholas they are, and Eux Autres are good enough when you do not want to be everyone else.
