Evenmark:
Invisible Clown Seasons (EP) The Evenmark CD sent to LOTD for review is barely an EP; with only three tracks, it clocks in at just under fourteen minutes long. But "quality before quantity," to use an annoying phrase, is the review principle adopted here. This is what Evenmark delivers: three smart and concise rockers. The bands style is decidedly post-grunge: the focus is on the catchy, hard rock guitar riffs and the "emotional" vocals. The rhythm section is minimal, and the production is radio-ready. While I can't give Evenmark very many points for originality, that doesn't stop me from quite enjoying these songs. To begin with, I really like the vocal performance, particularly on "Invisible." The singing is nicely melodic but not overly studio-glossy, and it is expressive but not overly angst filled (and falling into grunge music clichs). The songwriting is good for this kind of music, which doesn't need to be complicated. Evenmark layers the guitars. You've got electrics on top of acoustics (or sometimes the other way around), and I think it sounds great and fits the mood perfectly. To top it off, Evenmark has some simple but effective guitar solos. Those who only like music that is complicated or challenging or experimental will probably get bored of Evenmark in less than 30 seconds. But for those who appreciate hook-laden, hard rock Live, Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam, and so on I think that those people will definitely enjoy all 14 minutes.
