Explosions in
the Sky: The Earth Is Not a Cold Dead Place
Have you ever felt the sudden urge to cry at a rock show? No, not because you just spent $20 to see a band only to realize that the CD is a vast improvement over the real thing, but because you are so absorbed in the music that you have completely lost track of yourself. Explosions in the Sky is the band that did this for me. This quartet from Austin, Texas is just the sort of band that has the intensity and talent to reach into your soul and dredge up long forgotten memories of sadness, anger, and hope. Their latest album, The Earth is Not a Cold Dead Place, is an optimistic sequel to their first. While maintaining the drama and intensity that this band is becoming known for, the new album has a distinctly more positive and hopeful feel than the last. First Breath after Coma opens up and sets the mood with a single beeping, reminiscent of a heart monitor. An easy, lilting guitar quickly builds the song to intense, explosive levels. And, thats only the beginning. Explosions in the Sky carries the listener up and down through this emotionally intense album. Each song blends seamlessly from one to the next, building to evolve into something new with each turn. Strong bass lines and pounding drums swell to heart-wrenching climaxes and then drift back into melodic, intertwining guitars. Memorial is one of the heaviest songs on the album, as intensity increases through hard drumming and pulsing guitar only to explode and collapse with electric noise. The Memorial then melts into Your Hand in Mine. This final song evokes feelings of absolute hope and strength through sweet melodies coupled with military style drumming. A calming ending after an emotional ride. Explosions in the Sky stands above most of the instrumental bands out there. They create music that you feel rather than just hear. And, as amazing as this album is, dont ever miss a chance to see this band live.
