Kleppinger: No Galore
Faith Kleppingers sophomore record, aptly titled No Galore, weaves a haunted chamber of gilded memories that permeate the barren walls of a recently occupied apartment. Her choked whispers seamlessly wrap a quaint blanket around the listener. She equally employs both her familiar acoustic guitar and a newly acquired electric that serve as the backbone of each song, occasionally conjuring up some undulating strings and a few drumbeats for measure and accent. Her use of backing vocals in Understudy Lines produce brooding chorus-like builds, and hand-claps commencing the B section in Gone Singin add necessary dynamics to No Galore by nicely juxtaposing the albums more reticent counterparts. Gone Singin is perhaps Faiths most experimental song on the album, both melodically and musically. At times, her breathy vocals are textually reminiscent of Chan Marshall with vocals overdubbed for fuller sound and notes that gently crackle between fleeting breaths, holding out just long enough to sustain each phrase. Her song Sleep Out, however, musically dabbles with chord structures and tempos akin to a piece one might expect from the Innocence Mission. As a whole, the album is primarily composed of tranquil lines and simple resolves that warmly introvert the listener through bitter-sweat lullabies of love and loss. Faiths lyrics convey unique and lonely realities that individuals inhabit, offering an abundance of tongue-and-cheek criticisms thinly veiling an empathetic voice searching for understanding. In her final song, Ready Made, she sings, When the sounds are all around/ You cant recognize one/ How can you choose between the sinning and the sun?, ultimately recognizing the white noise that engulfs post-modern life, while leaving it up to individual to free oneself from the distractions that delude and complicate it a life of, otherwise, no galore.
