Filthy Jim: Whiskey and Porn
[Tour Horse Records]

I like whiskey.  I like porn.  Put them together...  hot damn, why didnt I think of that?

Whiskey & Porn is the debut full-length from Lawrence, KSs Filthy Jim.  I dont even know if you can actually call it a full-length, since it clocks in at just over 26 minutes.  But it has twelve songs, so that has to count for something, right?

Taking a look at song titles like, Hooker, Switchblade, and Cunt, you can probably guess how this band sounds.  Theyve got a predilection for cuss words and dirty rock & roll.  The guitar riffs are marinated in liquor.  It really reminded me of Mudhoney, circa Superfuzz Bigmuff, with a touch of early era Motley Crue.

When youre sick of Stephen Malkmus showing off his vocabulary, Filthy Jim is there to speak to you in the four-letter words that you understand.  When youre tired of Jack White pretending hes Led Zeppelin, Filthy Jim is there to show you how to REALLY rock.

This is a great CD to throw on when you want to rock, but if youre looking for something with a bit more substance, you may be disappointed.  It is absolutely impossible to tell what theyre singing/screaming 90% of the time.  There are no lyrics in the insert or on their website.  Sure, this might be brilliantly composed poetry, but I doubt it.  And without a Rosetta Stone to decipher the vocals, well never know for sure.

I enjoyed listening to Filthy Jim.  Theyve got a lot of energy, and they managed to capture it well on tape.  And just when you start to get tired of the assault, its over.  Nothing wrong with that.
