Fitzgerald:
Light a Match and Burn It Slowly
The husband/wife team of Fitzgerald busts out twelve delightful tunes on their debut album, Light a Match and Burn it Slowly. At times the album slows down and often the message can be of sadness and/or remorse, but the combined effect with the more upbeat and/or sardonic numbers makes the album come together for a solid listen. Lyrics like Artists arent good people, theyll only break your heart/ Only good for one thing, only good for art help in painting the big picture that is Fitzgerald. Nathaniel Graham Tensen Woolery is the predominant songwriter/performer on the album. He plays all the instrumentation and is consistently singing harmonies with his wife Mandy. Mandy is credited with being chief collaborator and typically takes on the more dominant lead vocal. As with most albums that are presented with the boy/girl combination doing the vocals, the male part seems more representative of the folk vibe of these acoustic guitar driven songs. The female vocal adds the seductiveness that may not always highlight the lyrics but enhance the vocal presentation. The tracks Dirt, And All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt, Consonants and Vowels, and Recent Events are all tracks that display Fitzgeralds strengths at full form. Wwhen Mandy takes over lead vocal duties, there tends to be a Joni Mitchell like quality to her tone, especially on the track Consonants and Vowels. The arrangement is strong but simple, showcasing Mandys voice and Nathanials musical abilities on the cello and slide guitar. Recent Events, a song that seems to follow someones descent into questioning faith, is brought to life with the lyric, Youve seen much more than Ive ever seen/ From the mean streets of Calcutta to washing Jesus feet. There is something humble and beautiful about that image. Theres something humble and beautiful about this album.
