Flannelmouth: (What a) Comeback/Bravado (single)
[Grid]

Out of Finland is the recently founded Grid Records putting out a new double A-Side single by the band Flannelmouth.  This is a taste of their as yet untitled album that should be out soon, but the two tracks here are quite fun.  I know Ive heard or read about Flannelmouth somewhere before, but this is probably my first chance to hear them.

It starts off with (What A) Comeback, and I can certainly see why the band has gotten some attention in the UK.  There are little brit-pop arrangements thrown into the song, but it really isnt formulaic.  Perhaps the Scandinavian roots of this band add a bit of flair to their songs, because the vocals sound fresh.  If I had to compare his voice to something, Id choose a combination of Benjamin Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Erlend Oyes (Kings of Convenience), and Paul Banks (Interpol).  I guess it is the guitar that has the Brit-Pop edge, and what do I mean by Brit-Pop guitar anyway?  Just think of writing 8 brilliant guitar hooks, and try to cram them all into one 3 minute pop song.  Thats Brit-Pop to me.  If you want to sound like American Pop, just write two guitar hooks: put one in the verse, one in the chorus and youre done.

So by comparing Flannelmouth with their European neighbors, all Im doing is pointing out their attention to detail and their talent for writing hypnotic melodies.  Mix this music with a unique sounding vocalist that can hit the high and low notes and add some lyrics that are far better than Id expect to come from a band with an odd name like Flannelmouth, and youve got a pretty sweet record.  Hopefully their new album will be full of tracks this as good as these.
