Flannelmouth:
Rain Inside
When I popped Rain Inside into my CD player, I was immediately pleased with what I heard. Id already reviewed Flannelmouths single (What A) Comeback a few months earlier, but I was quickly reassured that they had even more to offer when I heard the tracks Here Comes the Fight and Last Exit. These guys are from Helsinki, Finland, and the singer Tuomo Kuusi certainly doesnt disguise his Scandinavian accents. This gives the band a bit of a Brit-pop feel in the same way many UK artists proudly display their regional drawl. Yet the music here has much more energy and depth than say the new Kaiser Chiefs LP for example. The band is obviously a crew of inspired musicians that enjoy mixing melodies, driving guitars, and bass lines into their songs with fabulous results. A song like Dead Moody is almost convincing enough to be played in a club. Even if the singing style doesnt jump out at you to indicate a big hit, the brief synthesizer squeaks and the fabulous interlocking guitars certainly leave a strong and highly energized impression. Another key to this albums success is the variety in song style that Flannelmouth displays, without dipping into dangerous territories of Brit-pop clich. They slow down things a bit for tracks like Collection, but they dont try and hit you with a sappy ballad a la Travis or Coldplay. This makes Flannelmouth a good listen for anyone who enjoys the frenetic, high-energy rock styles of Brit-pop, but isnt terribly interested in lightweight imitations.
