The Flesh:
Self-Titled
Ah, the post-punk revival continues to thrive in true indie fashion after The Rapture, Radio 4 and Hot Hot Heat have all moved on to major labels. The Brooklyn-based four-piece that goes by The Flesh gives it their best shot on this self-titled debut, but many will be quick to say that the records sound is no longer relevant. However if you have had not had your fill of the dance-punk sound by now, this record will stoke your feverish need to grind and mosh simultaneously. The grooves on this record will certainly find their way into those indie rock dance night playlists, but the catchiness of songs such as The Lack and Cuts could also just as easily land the remix treatment by The Neptunes or Timbaland. One song that is strikingly in the hip-hop vein is Sweet Defeat, and perhaps this is because the music on the track is virtually identical to the Aaliyah song Are You That Somebody from 1998. It seems as though The Flesh has no idea that they pretty much lifted the beat from Aaliyah and Timbaland. However, if it is a crime to do that in hip-hop, there wouldnt be anymore hardcore MCs rapping about prison life; because they would all find themselves in musical lock-down once again. If you are still into the dance-punk anthems, then you will feel this record hard. In reality, there is no need to label styles as being dead or over if you are still into the music, so if you think Williamsburg is the heat, then pick up this release and get ready to turn your sweater inside out. Realize, though, that you might enter a world of hipster-overload.
