Foo-sa:
Self-Titled EP
in the middle of a sentence. Though grammatically incorrect, this fragment qualifies as a basic description of how Philadelphias Foo-sa begins its equally patchy 4-song demo, a rush of sound and confusion that lasts a mere 9 minutes and 13 seconds. Listeners are shot directly into the meat of opening track 1,000 Dimes with no instrumental build up to ease into lead singer Dans (no last name to be found) Paul Banks-esque, monotonic drawl. Indeed, Foosas self-titled debut could pass as a rare recording of the first time Interpol came together to jam, completely practice- and polish-free. Guitars drift off-key, bass and drums lose their beat irksome at times, but it does lend a sort of raw, chaotic charm to the demo. Second track Brace Yourself is lighter on its feet than the murky Dimes, using bassist Saras harmonies to brighten the mood. Disenchanted similarly laces upbeat guitar and vocal lines with its dark, frenetic rhythm section. Its not until the final track that things officially unglue. Without Chance is a structure-less whirlwind that sounds as much like a dial tuned between radio stations as a song. Luckily, it cuts off mid-noise after about two minutes, ending the demo as suddenly as it began. Foo-sa the demo is a mess, to be sure. But considering that Foo-sa the band has been together a mere six months, they could be given some leeway. Its nothing another half-year of serious band practice couldnt potentially cure.
