 Forever Moon: FM Radio

This second release from this Baltimore-based band lives up to its title; any one of these songs would fit in on a Clear Channel-approved radio playlist.  Forever Moon play radio-friendly modern rock that is so non-threatening, it virtually screams Play me!  Please, please play me!

The press sheet that came with the disc compares the band to Tom Petty, Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Vertical Horizon.  While I cant really hear Tom or Toad, I can see the Vertical Horizon connection, particularly in the vocals of Scott Patterson.  Overall, its pretty much what you would expect the production of the songs is slick, with the drums and vocals up front in the mix it doesnt sound like your typical self-produced and self-released disc.  The songs sound like something youd hear at your local bar, but would be relegated to the background.  Its good music to be playing while you chat up the girl you met in Freshman English.  Unfortunately, it doesnt really offer anything we havent heard before.  From the topics of the songs to the sounds of the guitars to the sound of the songs themselves, theyre mining the same trails that were already tired when Hootie and the Blowfish hit nearly ten years ago.  The problem with Frat Rock is that when your main audience graduates from college, buying records is not usually something that matters to them anymore.  The problem with this sort of music is that it ends up sacrificing any kind of originality in order to fit in with the stuff thats being served up on the radio.  The band plays their instruments well, but the songs are so ordinary that good musicianship cant really save them.

All in all, FM Radio is a solid release, ready for the radio.  Unfortunately, the radio isnt really where good music ends up these days.
