FUGAZI Fugazi formed in
1987 in Washington D.C. as a three-piece group that included lead vocalist Ian MacKaye, bassist Joe Lally and drummer Brendan Canty. Guitarist Guy Picciotto was added to the lineup after the band's first live shows. Prior to forming all the members had been involved in
various bands in the D.C.
punk scene, including Embrace and Rites of Spring. Fugazi's sharp rhythms, imaginative arrangements, and political diatribes produced some of the most intelligent and creative
post-hardcore rock &
roll. Famed for their commitment to playing only all-age shows, shunning mainstream press interviews,
Fugazi has turned down deals with almost every major record label, preferring to produce albums on their own, independent, Dischord label. Fugazi's energetic live shows (where moshing was vociferously objected to by the band) soon started to attract large crowds. Their stridently underground ethics and fierce independence, gained them a large and extremely loyal following. Among some of their more famous fans are R.E.M's Michael Stipe, Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, and the late Kurt Cobain. In 1988, the band started what has become a prolific recording run. By 1993 they had gained a national audience and were playing sold-out shows across the USA.
and the rest of the world. The Instrument video and soundtrack was released in
1999, the result of several years spent working on a Fugazi documentary; a lengthy homage to the band, including live performances and interviews. DISCOGRAPHY:
