The Fugue: Mysterious Animals EP
[RIYL]

Conventional structure is out. Noise and chaos are in. Around the time I was heading into high school to get ridiculed, I stumbled across punk rock and art rock by way of the college radio station. I didnt necessarily know what noise, punk and art rock were, but I knew I was really digging the Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth and Fugazi that was getting pumped into my virgin ears. It sure beat the hell out of the current (to then) metal scene that was coughing up death on the normal stations. I did not so much understand it, but it meant something, it was different, and it created these feelings in me I didnt think could be felt through music. Less boundaries and more freedom in music meant more than just that. I realized there are levels to music. It is not all the same.

The rawness and sincerity of The Fugue feels the same to me now as those bands did back then. The Fugue has thrown formulaic rock to the wind, and through shards of angular guitar, slightly off-setting rhythm, and out of key vocals they follow the less traveled path through rock. Its a style that has, in fact, been done, but by this point, what hasnt? Its exciting. The emotions that a band stir up inside you is what theyre worth and who they are. If a band wants to be chaotic, noisy and wild, let them get lost in it; and if it stirs something in you, its good. Maybe they dont even understand what was put to tape.

Their guitars slip back and forth just enough to be captivatingly agitating, while the bass stays deeply rooted around the same note alongside the pounding drums. The Fugue are crashing and experimental rocknroll, and theyre a good listen. Id place them up around Arab on Radar among others.
