Garrett Sawyer: Anthem

This was not what I expected.  Looking at the cover, I figured that this CD would be filled with nice, acoustic melodies another in an endless stream of folk records.  So imagine my surprised when I found an album full of bombastic songs covered with electric guitars, drum machines, and synthesizers!

Thats not to say that this isnt a folk record.  There is ample acoustic guitar throughout, and the lyrics definitely lean towards topical subjects.  The title track lives up to its name, with the album name checking the revolutionary war as Sawyer sings, Give me something to believe in besides the sky.  The lyrics are very verbose, and at times, seem to be there only to take up space until the next line comes along.

Sawyers singing is not typical for this kind of music; he relies more on speaking/singing the lyrics so that they are clear and easy to understand.  At times, his voice reminds me of both Lou Reed and Michael Stipe (for the latter specifically around the time of Lifes Rich Pageant, when you could understand what he was saying while the melody was sacrificed).  This style of singing helps with this record, because there is so much going on in the songs word-wise that anything less than succinct vocals would hamper the messages Sawyer is trying to relay through the songs.

Overall, the production is tight and the mix is good.  Some of the guitar effects sound kind of 80s cheesy, as does almost all of the synth work, but everythings clear and its a well-produced album.  This sort of thing is not really my cup of tea, but if youre a fan of bombastic folk/rock, you should give Anthem a listen.
