Gatsby's American Dream: Ribbons & Sugar
[Rocket Star]

The first thing I must mention is that the packaging for this CD is pretty awesome.  The artwork definitely elevated my interest in hearing the music.  And even before popping it in the player, I read that these guys toured with Rocky Votolato, which automatically sets them up a notch in my book.  So what did I hear?  An amazing CD.  Gatsbys American Dream makes music that is a perfect blend of math, punk, weird, and pop.  Very sweet.  Imagine Mock Orange meeting up with Jupiter-era Cave In, before calling up Coheed & Cambria, and then beating the shit out of Taking Back Sunday.

The highlights of the album include "A Manifesto of Tangible Wealth" (this whole CD has an Animal Farm theme, might I add) which starts with a creepy organ riff and distant, distorted vocals.  Then the whole band comes in, and the song builds extreme tension (What's this?  A band that's capable of holding back for dramatic effect?), and then ends in a deliciously anticlimactic swirl of noise.  Wonderful.  "Epilogue" is another fine example of this bands talent.  Dueling vocals, amazing guitar riffs, strong lyrics this song has it all.  "The Horse You Rode in On" turns it down a notch, and bathes in a very pretty ambience that makes you feel like the world is in slow motion.  And just as you feel yourself drifting off to blissful sleep, "Recondition, Reprogram, Reactivate" brings back the rock.  The album ends with "Counterfeit Language," an angular and intelligent example of the bands skill.  Thank you Gatsby's American Dream for a fulfilling listening experience.

What more can I say?  This is a great album from a great band.  If you haven't heard of them yet, you will.
