The Get-Outs: Get the Message
[Avebury]

Bristol, UKs The Get-Outs first official release, Get the Message, reminded me of a trip I took over Winter Break:

While I was in New York this December to participate in a New Years celebration that I will never forget, two albums were played over and over on my iPod to the point where I will forever associate them with my first legal trip to the Big Apple: The Kinks Village Green and Supergrass I Should Coco.  I know Im supposed to love Village Green, but it lacked the rawness of early Kinks, and for that, I didnt enjoy it.  The reason I kept listening to it was because I felt like there would be a point where I was staring at Washington Square, and it would hit me like a ton of bricks.  It didnt happen.  What I love about I Should Coco is what I missed about Village Green: great pop songs that are made to blow your hair back because of their aggressive nature.  The Get-Outs reminded me of what I loved about walking around New York with Supergrass.

The Get Outs play with intensely distorted guitars, heavy hitting drums, screaming vocals, and a pop sensibility in a punk rock world.  The thing that makes us all want to listen to any band is good songwriting.  You can see through any band that tries to cover up their lack of songwriting ability by turning their amps up to 11.  This band does  turn their amps to 11, but its only to make sure we can hear their smart chord changes and captivating melodies something that punk rock music doesnt allow us to hear all that often.

I have to admit that loud, screaming punk music is a very small contribution to my record collection.  And while we can all agree that Supergrass isnt punk music, the Get-Outs take the amazing British Pop qualities of Supergrass and boil it until it becomes faster and harder but without losing the songwriting that kept it alive in the first place.
