Giant Drag:
Lemona
Cordial Invitation gives a dreamy, Belly-esque structure to this five-song EPs consistent style, stringing out chanting vocals over droning guitars and a consistently yearning, anxious boredom. Focusing in on the Joy Division guitar drones and excellent percussion, and highlighting Annie Hardys lovely voice, the superior second track, Tired Yet, demonstrates whats right with the band: dynamic and suspenseful time changes and feedback leading into an asymmetric outro that would make the Breeders proud. One wishes for the occasional respite from the angry, pseudo-sexy boredom (I will fuck you while you cry? could be the entire EPs tagline, rather than a refrain on its final track), and several songs inch toward liftoff, but even the most impending release into joy is finally disappointing, returning to basic Giant Drag mope-sex at the last moment. Yflmd does better but still doesnt step out of the very strict range of emotions and keys the band seems comfortable exploring. One is reminded of the first few Garbage albums, lyrically: we get it, Annie. Youre hardcore. Ultimately, recent changes in the lineup may allow for a more experimental, secure, and mature energy to the group moving forward, but this Lemona is more bitter than sour: darker in subject and lighter in musical inspiration than it needs to be.
