God Fights
Dirty: Meow
Philadelphias God Fights Dirty is a four-guy band on their third full-length release entitled Meow. The first track on their CD, Quick to Bleed starts off promising, but then again, loud guitars sound good most of the time. Once the song actually starts (you know, vocals, chord changes, etc.) the musical simplicity of this band is obvious and it follows them throughout the rest of the record. The drum breaks are what stand out most to me very abrupt, power-pop type drums that could be associated with bands that refer to themselves as punk but are really just mild-mannered rock. Encore is not bad lyrically, but I just cant get past the singers voice. It may be a personal preference, but it just isnt strong enough for me it is entirely too off-key and flat. This is a bitchin line though: you have become someone I would rather not be under, while you watch your beauty fade, make sure you are well paid It drums up visions of a used-up, busted gal who was in a mildly popular band for like a year or two and was the toast of the town before it all went to shit. Well never know why; well just wonder and eventually forget about her and her band. Or for a better visual of the used up and busted, a current guest of some haughty-taughty rehab joint, Ms. Courtney Love. How far they fall, and how compelled we are to watch. The next song is Wannabe. Its about wanting to be a prostitute (I think) and 15 minutes of fame, etc. These guys are totally into singing about broken dreams and unfortunate endings a bit sad and hopeless. About seeing the stars and being mesmerized. They just want to be famous. It is spelled out in most of their songs, but do you need more proof? The albums liner notes even say, Call Ray, he wont bite unless you want him to and he says hed do just about anything to get signed. I thought this was funny, but it would be funnier if it were on an album that sounded better. These guys arent bad, but it is hard to tell since they are hidden under a painful recording. The singer needs to get some vocal lessons or be replaced altogether and they need to invest in a good recording that they can shop around, instead of something that sounds like it was recorded in their basement.
