Goner: Dollar Movie
This is a fantastic disc.
The debut record from this Raleigh trio mashes together the basics of
indie rock with the sensibilities of the recording studio, resulting in a strong
collection of songs that you will want to listen to again and again. A number of bands enter recording
studios intent on recording the basics; wanting to get on tape the way they
sound when they perform live. In
many cases, these records end up flat, because of the numerous differences in
the way a song sounds on record and in a club.
Without the audience and the atmosphere, songs can fall apart, or just
end up sitting there, lifeless. Goner
has realized that the studio can be a great way to augment well-written songs
with little touches that can make them more interesting while still retaining
their basic forms. Throughout the
12 tracks on this disc, the band adds drum loops, weird percussion (such as
coffee cans and bottles), and toy instruments to the basic
guitar/bass/keys/drums setup. This
allows the songs to breathe, and makes the disc something youll want to
listen to more than once. The CD also gives a hint at many
of Goners possible influences. Buried
in the songs I can hear bits and pieces of many groups, from the Replacements,
Ben Folds, and Weezer to newer artists such as Guster and Ben Kweller.
One of the most impressive feats (to my ears) is that they manage to at
times resemble both old folk-rock R.E.M. AND new electronic/atmospheric R.E.M.
sometimes in the same song! This is a great album, from the music (produced by the band with Greg Elkins) to the packaging (designed by the band and Brandon Whitesell). They have created a very professional collection of great songs. Theyve managed to take the good parts of the recording studio (interesting sounds, the addition of more instruments) without any of the bad (overdone effects, bombast for bombasts sake). For more information, check out Eskimo Kiss Records, and definitely pick up a copy of this album.
