Gordon Hunter & The Wandering Rocks: Self-Titled
[self-released]

Who would write selected narratives to accompany his songs? Gordon Hunter would. He would also be a classically trained pianist who thinks that pseudo-new wave pianos and muddy mixes make for art rock. Hmmmm.

It is hard to describe what effect these bizarre influences produce on Gordon Hunter and the Wandering Rocks Promo EP. The four quick tunes emit the feel of adult contemporary piano cheese with horns, simultaneously bordering on light jazz and aiming for punk. Vocally, Mr. Hunter channels Morrissey in some cases, and an average, whiney man in others.

I wont pretend that I dont admire Mr. Hunters lofty aspirations: it isnt easy to merge a passion for literature with wildly varied musical styles and make it all sound as effortless as One Ring Zero. Unfortunately, listening to the debut collection of demos is a laborious process. Gordon Hunter would do better to ditch the arty attempts at standing out and use his sometimes-brilliant voice to gain an audience.
