Grails: The Burden of Hope
[Neurot]

These five guys got together in Portland, Oregon from all corners of the nation to form this intense, moody instrumental band that once called themselves Laurel Canyon on their two previously released EPs with Pamlico Sounds.  The group consists of Emil Amos on drums, Timothy Horner on violin, Alex Hall on guitar, William Slater on piano and bass and Zak Riles on guitar.  Timothys violin often floats above the rest and acts as the lead voice, guiding the listener through each amazingly intense and emotional journey that pushes the Grails above the rest.

The first track, Burden of Hope, enters quietly, setting the mood with guitars, slow building drums and a shivery violin that will cause the hairs to stand up on the back of your neck. Lord I Hate Your Day slowly wanders in, creating a sad, yet optimistic mood.  The Deed boasts an Eastern European influenced violin, while In the Beginning features a more folk influenced piano followed by the spacey and undefined Invocation.  Midway through the record is the beautiful reinterpretation of Sun City Girls Space Prophet Dogon followed by a more somber, slightly Irish-influenced, The March and a light, sadly content Broken Ballad.  White Flag, the penultimate song, is where the violin, guitars and drums really let go and rock out in the second half of the track.  You then arrive to a perfect album closer, Canyon Hymn, that rises and fills the listener with a sense of accomplishment as if hes endured a long journey and has finally arrived, overjoyed and content.

The record boasts a great deal of drama and mysterious emotion that explodes and melts away with beautifully arranged instrumentals.  The music will pull the listener into a dream world and linger far after the music has stopped.  Few can say so much without actually saying anything at all.
