Hand Offensive
Hand Offensive is the wildly uneven debut from Grenadier (Mark Mattson, Craig Swafford and Jeremy Heroldt), an album that gets it right about half the time. Its not merely a case of good song, bad song, good song, bad song, because its usually within the songs themselves that quality competes with crap. Still, the rewarding moments are there to be enjoyed. Nowhere is this better exemplified than on the bands Easily Swallowed, a song that starts off like something Steely Dan might have been proud to write and then pairs it with an awkward bridge that doesnt quite hit the mark, boss riff be damned. Karma See Thru features the ace guitar work and consistency youd expect from any good Radiohead/Floyd hybrid, but its followed by Boys of Rage, a song not suited to Heroldts vocal talent (Im thinking Doug Martsch here). Gods of Gravity is another one that doesnt feel at home with the vocals (though Andy Partridge might have had fun with this one). Heres a band whose musical vocabulary outreaches their singers range. But ability they have, and if they can write an albums worth of tunes as good as Karma See Thru and Powerless that Heroldt can sing to, then theyll have something.
