Half a Halo:
Self-Titled EP When I was a teenager, and into playing loudly music that I probably would be ashamed to admit to playing today, my father as most fathers have done at some point in our lives came into my room and uttered the parental classic, For the love of God, would you please turn down that noise! Know-it-all, punk brat that I was, or should that be, am, I, of course, rolled my eyes and complied, muttering all the while, under my breath, He just doesnt get it. I swore Id never get that old too, as I recall. Well, as it turns out, I have gotten that old. Stop the presses, and alert the media; I must be a crotchety, old bastard because Half A Halos self-title released sounds exactly like noise to me. Toronto, Canadas Half A Halo, a self-described organic hard rock band, has produced a well-crafted three-song demo, no doubt the result of singer/guitarist/songwriter, Dav-os work as a full time producer/mixer. Ultimately, the disc is an uninspiring, train-wreck of influences and clichd lyrics. On opening cut, Horizon, where band plays with an admirable intensity, the dual, contrasting vocal styles proves to be interesting at first, but wears thing pretty quickly. The tune, however, is undone by some completely unimaginative lyrics. The other two tracks, Impulse and Special, cannot pull the demo out of its tailspin, as they sound like songs that the Stone Temple Pilots would have thought best to leave on the cutting room floor. In the end, this disc simply doesnt do it for me. I love old-school punk, and a lot of other stuff that could be considered noise. I guess theres good noise and bad noise. Ultimately, its your ears that have to do the deciding
