The Haywards:
Scene Missing
Scene Missing by The Haywards is basically an acoustic solo performance by David Enright. The dozen songs included here all sound fairly professional, perhaps a result of Davids strong, confident vocals and proficient guitar skills. This is crucial to the albums success, because the mood of each song is rather understated and casual without much variation. Some of the lyrical themes dip into relationships and more evocative themes, but David keeps the vocals sounding a bit detached in classic indie rock fashion to give you the impression that modern life is a bit too dull to be all that disconcerting. I think of calm vocal deliveries from bands like Sebadoh and the Lemonheads when I hear Scene Missing. Some tracks like Mirror sound a little more like straight pop in an understated Beatles fashion, but they do a good job of keeping your interest. I suppose the whole album isnt really just acoustic guitar. Some tracks pile on some electric instruments, but the feel of the LP remains sort of calm and subdued despite the instrument changes. I Didnt Want to Owe You is a nice, quiet song that could stand up against a lot of mellow tracks and fare pretty well, especially with its rolling guitar hooks, and somber lyrics. I have no faith in faith, and I dont throw away hope on the hopeless David sings, and if youre in the right sort of introspective mood, Scene Missing can be a worthwhile experience.
