The Heroine
Sheiks: Siamese Pipe
With a band name like The Heroine Sheiks and the trippy album art, I figured I was in for a psychedelic experience. Instead I got gritty punk rock plagued with keyboards. This is the second full-length release from the Sheiks, following their Rape on the Installment Plan double album. You should know singer Shannon Selberg from his previous band, the Cows. Hes got a weathered voice that reminds me of his holiness, the Reverend Horton Heat. The rock and roll is pretty straightforward here. What makes it interesting is the odd sounds (mostly keyboards) that are thrown into the mix. The keyboard and whistling in 3-Banger is obnoxiously out of place, yet catchy as hell, making it one of the albums best tracks. The keyboards in Mas Suicide are also an integral part of what makes the song great (along with the monkey mating call). But unfortunately, more often than not, these attempts at being clever backfire. Some of the keyboards just sound so juvenile that they ruin the experience. Best track? Grab the Wheel which is dark and unflinching. Army Brat is also quite good. My Boss is okay, but it reminds me too much of Aerosmiths My Girl. Album low points include Open You Up, Kiss It, and the pedophile blues of Little Schoolgirl. Theres good stuff here, though not enough of it to warrant a purchase. Download the good songs, and put them on your next CD mix. (Be sure to mail the band a few bucks so that the RIAA doesnt sue you.)
